Weighted Grade Calculator
A weighted grade multiplies each category’s average by its weight, adds them up and divides by the total weight. Type each category’s scores and weight; if your weights don’t add up to 100%, we scale them for you.
Your weighted grade
86.99%B
- Your weights with scores add up to 85%, so each was scaled to make 100%. Left out until it has scores: Final exam.
| Category | Average | Weight | Counts as | Adds |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Homework | 93.75% | 20% | 23.53% | 22.06 |
| Quizzes | 88.89% | 30% | 35.29% | 31.37 |
| Tests | 81.5% | 35% | 41.18% | 33.56 |
How is a weighted grade calculated?
Weighted grade = (average 1 × weight 1 + average 2 × weight 2 + …) ÷ (weight 1 + weight 2 + …), counting only categories that have scores.
Worked example. Homework: 95, 88, 100, 92 averages 93.75%, weighted 20%. Quizzes: 18/20, 17/20, 45/50 averages 88.89%, weighted 30%. Tests: 84, 79 averages 81.5%, weighted 35%. The final exam (15%) has no scores yet.
Multiply and add: 93.75 × 20 + 88.89 × 30 + 81.5 × 35 = 7394.17.
Divide by the weights used, 20 + 30 + 35 = 85: the grade is 86.99%, a B on the plus/minus scale.
Why do my weights not add up to 100%?
Usually because some categories have no grades yet, most often the final exam. Your teacher’s gradebook then works out your grade from the categories that do have grades, and so do we. Once the final is graded, all the weights count and the total reaches 100%. If your weights add up to more than 100%, check your syllabus: we still scale them, but one of them may be typed wrong.
What will my grade be after the final?
Add the final’s score to its category and the grade updates. To work out the score you need for a certain grade, use the final grade calculator with the grade shown here as your current grade.
Questions about weighted grades
How do I calculate a weighted grade?
Average the scores in each category, multiply each average by its weight, add those up and divide by the total of the weights. Homework 93.75% at 20%, Quizzes 88.89% at 30%, Tests 81.5% at 35% give a weighted grade of 86.99%.
What if my weights don’t add up to 100%?
We divide by the total of the weights you used, which scales them to 100%. If the final exam (15%) has no scores yet, the other weights add to 85%, and each counts for its share of 85. That is how most online gradebooks show your grade during the term.
How are the scores in a category averaged?
If every score in a category is in points, like 18/20 and 45/50, the points are added up: 63 out of 70 is 90%. If you type percents, each counts equally. A mix of both is averaged as percents.
What is the difference between a weighted and an unweighted grade?
In an unweighted (points) class, every point counts the same, so a 100-point test counts ten times a 10-point quiz. In a weighted class, each category counts for a set share of your grade, however many points it has. Your syllabus says which your class uses.
Can I see how much each category counts?
Yes. The table under your grade shows each category’s average, its weight, the share it really counts for once the weights are scaled, and the points it adds to your grade.
