Test Grade Calculator

Your test grade is the questions you got right divided by the total, times 100. With 3 wrong out of 25, that is 22 ÷ 25 × 100 = 88%. Type your own numbers to get the percent and the letter.

How do I calculate a test grade?

Test grade = (total − number wrong) ÷ total × 100. With points: (total points − points lost) ÷ total points × 100.

Worked example. A 25-question test with 3 wrong: 25 − 3 = 22 right. 22 ÷ 25 = 0.88, and × 100 = 88%, a B+ on the plus/minus scale.

Each question is worth 100 ÷ 25 = 4 percentage points, so every extra wrong answer costs 4 points.

How does a test grade affect my class grade?

It depends on how your class is graded. In a points class, the test adds its points to your total. In a weighted class, it goes into a category such as “Tests 40%”. Add the score to the grade calculator or the weighted grade calculator to see what it does to your grade.

Grading a whole stack of tests?

Teachers can skip the sums: the EZ grader prints a chart for any number of questions, with every number wrong, its percent and its letter, including half points.

Questions about test grades

How do I calculate my test grade?

Subtract the questions you got wrong from the total, divide by the total and multiply by 100. On a 25-question test with 3 wrong: (25 − 3) ÷ 25 × 100 = 88%.

What if questions are worth different points?

Use points instead of questions: type the total points on the test and the points you lost (or earned). A 60-point test where you lost 9 points is (60 − 9) ÷ 60 = 85%.

How many questions can I miss and still get an A?

On a 10-point scale, an A starts at 90%, so you can miss 10% of the questions: 2 on a 20-question test, or 2 on a 25-question test (2.5 with half points). The table in the calculator shows the most you can miss for every letter.

How do half points work?

Type them as decimals: 2.5 wrong means two wrong answers and one half-credit answer. On a 20-question test, 2.5 wrong is 87.5%.

What is a passing test grade?

On the scales here, 60% is the lowest D and anything below it is an F. Many schools and classes set a higher passing mark, such as 65% or 70%, so check your syllabus.
